Re-Urbanise: A New Core Program in Urban Design

Our new core program Re-Urbanise allows students to examine the urban world around them and explore architecture and urban planning.

Recently, students trialed this new core program through the exploration of urban design,  investigating innovative possibilities and holistically prototyping urban redevelopment strategies. Key areas of focus include:

  • Urban densification
  • Human-centred design
  • “Missing middle” housing solutions
  • Sustainability
  • Governance

Day 1 Immersive Exploration and Model Making

At the Tech School students explore an immersive simulation of architectural super star Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67. Recreated in Unreal Engine 5, students experience an inspiring alternate version of urban densification and analyse first hand the elements and features required to create a human-centric, culturally appropriate model that incorporates the wants and needs of the suburbs with the amenity and efficiency advantages of dense inner-city living.

Students then undertake a sequence of internal planning exercises, utilising architectural drawings and scaled furniture facsimiles to become familiar with, and build skills in internal housing layout. Following this, students engage in architectural model making and begin creating a sustainable inhabitant- focussed ‘missing middle’ development proposal to densify neighbourhoods, all while maintaining the qualities and elements that make them great places to live.

Day 2 Advanced Digital Prototyping

Students are taught how to use Autodek Revit and TwinMotion for Revit to create a digital twin of their proposal and prototype the more advanced elements such as internal layouts, sightlines, landscaping and user experience. By integrating these technologies, students can rapidly modify layouts and test full walkthroughs of their designs.

The Geelong Tech School wishes to offer our thanks to our inaugural trialling cohort for this program and we were greatly pleased to see how much interest and enjoyment the program has generated within this first cohort.
