Immerse, Ideate, Innovate, Impart

Earlier this week, we proudly hosted our second Industry Design Sprint for 2025. It was rewarding to see several students return, eager to build on their previous experience. Once again, they stepped beyond the classroom to tackle real-world challenges.

For those unfamiliar with the sprint, it’s a fast-paced program where students act as designers or consultants. They work directly with a business partner to solve authentic industry problems. The aim is to give students hands-on experience in creative problem-solving within a professional context.

The Design Sprint began with a refresher on human-centred design and a design thinking workshop. Students then split into two groups to visit our industry partners, Cobram Estate and Think Fencing. These site visits marked a turning point. Students toured facilities, engaged with experts, and gathered insights to inform their design process.

Back at the Tech School, students took part in an intensive session focused on problem definition, ideation, and decision-making. By the end of day one, teams had developed strong concepts, ready for prototyping the next day.

The morning of day two was a showcase of student engagement and inspiration. Teams raced against the clock to refine their ideas and strengthen their communication skills. They also prepared to pitch their solutions.

A highlight of the morning was a bespoke seminar delivered by Cotton On. The session offered a behind-the-scenes look at global design practices. Presenters shared design methodologies, business insights, and personal career journeys. They showed how the skills students were using underpin innovation in leading companies worldwide.

After the seminar, students had just under an hour to finalise their prototypes and prepare their pitches. Despite the time crunch, every team presented with confidence and enthusiasm. Their ideas showed keen insight and creative, unconventional thinking. Several industry partners requested copies of the presentations.

It was inspiring to witness the students’ maturity, focus, and drive for excellence. Of course, there were plenty of laughs along the way.

We consider it a privilege to run programs like this. A heartfelt thank you to our industry partners, Cobram EstateThink Fencing, and Cotton On, as well as our partner schools and students. Your time, energy, and commitment help bridge the gap between education and industry.

It was a delight to see students glimpse a potential future and build the skills to get there.
